Driftwood Art: The Heart of Hoi An’s Upcycled Art Scene

One of the most distinctive experiences in Hoi An’s art scene is discovering the beauty of driftwood sculpture, an art form shaped by nature, sustainability and storytelling.

At Làng Củi Lũ – Driftwood Village, reclaimed pieces of wood carried downstream by storms and floods are transformed by local artisans into expressive works of art. Each piece bears the natural traces of water, land and time before beginning a new life in the hands of a woodcarver.

A Creative Journey Born in Hoi An

Làng Củi Lũ – Driftwood Village was founded by Lê Ngọc Thuận, a self-taught artist and local entrepreneur from Hoi An. His creative journey began with a simple idea: to give new life to pieces of wood that nature had left behind.

During the pandemic, when tourism slowed down, Thuận dedicated more time to studying traditional woodworking and developing his own approach to driftwood sculpture. He also learned from the woodcarving traditions of Cơ Tu communities in the mountains, deepening his understanding of the relationship between materials, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

What began as a small creative workshop gradually grew into a place where driftwood, local craftsmanship and Vietnamese artistic talent could be preserved and shared.

Làng Củi Lũ first took shape in the peaceful surroundings of Tra Que, where its early workshop and driftwood sculptures laid the foundations for the journey ahead. In 2026, the Village entered a new chapter and moved to its current home at 01 Le Hong Phong Street, Hoi An Tay, a larger space bringing together the Driftwood Museum, gallery spaces, woodcarving workshops, café and craft store in one destination.

Through Làng Củi Lũ, Thuận hopes to share a simple message: materials that appear forgotten can be reborn through creativity, care and respect for nature.
